The Star Wars universe is by far one of the most intriguing universes out there. Created by George Lucas, the stories told have always told stories of Good vs. Evil in a galaxy far, far away. The Star Wars movies have starred such highly acclaimed actors and actresses like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, and Ewan McGregor amongst others. More stories are still being told in the universe, and with the announcements and reports that keep coming out, it can be hard to keep track of what Disney and Lucasfilm have announced so far regarding their Star Wars universe. Upcoming Star Wars Movies in Their Order of Release Dates

1. Star Wars: Episode IX (The Rise of Skywalker)

Release date: December 19, 2019 (UK)/December 20, 2019 (US)

Directed by: J.J. Abrams

The ninth entry in the Star Wars movies marks the end of the Luke Skywalker saga. The movie sees Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac reprise their roles as Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, and Poe Dameron respectively. Details on the movie are scarce, but it’s known it was originally meant to be directed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and written by Rian Johnson. However, J.J. Abrams was brought on later to handle both writing and directing. The story takes place sometime after Episode VIII. Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher are slated to appear in the movie, with unused footage used for her parts.

2. Stars Wars movies from Benioff and Weiss

Release date: December 16, 2022, December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026

Directed by: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced at a presentation that Disney had signed Games of Thrones creators and directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to make a trilogy based in the Star Wars universe. This new trilogy has a story that will be separate from the Skywalker Saga and the Rian Johnson trilogy. Outside of their release dates, details on the story elements or characters are not known, as Disney and Lucasfilm are yet to speak on the movies.

3. Star Wars movies from Rian Johnson

Release date: TBA

Directed by: Rian Johnson

Rian Johnson first came on board when he directed the commercially successful Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. Before the movie was released, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that he had been signed to start off a new trilogy of Star Wars Movies with characters from unexplored Star Wars lore. The movies are slated to be released after Benioff and Weiss’s movies, but that’s about all the information available.

Upcoming Star Wars TV Series

While there are several Star Wars Movies in the works, the television sector is also getting a lot of buzz with the Star Wars universe. Disney has announced over the years that they will be launching series based on characters in the Star Wars universe in their new streaming service Disney+. Here’s a list of what’s been announced so far according to their release dates.

1. The Mandalorian

Release date: November 12, 2019

Showrunner: Jon Favreau

Most would know Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was announced on April 2016 that he would direct and executive produce a Disney+ series titled The Mandalorian. The series stars Pedro Pascal in the role of the titular character. Work on season two began not long after the completion of one, with Favreau writing the story.

2. Upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ Series

Release date: TBA

Showrunner: TBA

The last time Obi-Wan was on screens was in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Actor Ewan McGregor confirmed that he would reprise the Obi-Wan role in a new Disney+ series. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that scripts were ready and shooting would begin in 2020. The series takes place eight years after Revenge of the Sith.

3. Upcoming Cassian Andor Disney+ Series

Release date: TBA

Showrunner: Stephen Schiff

Cassian Andor appeared in the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One. Lucasfilm announced on November 2018 that there would be a spy thriller Disney+ series based on the character. Diego Luna will reprise his role as the Rebel Alliance spy Cassian Andor, and Alan Tudyk returns as the droid K-2SO. The series is described as ‘a rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.’
