Born on 30 January 1933 and operating primarily as an inside-forward, he scored 118 goals in 360 league and cup appearances in an 11-year career in the bottom two divisions of the Football League.
Longbottom began his professional career with Queens Park Rangers in 1954, making his debut in a 1–1 draw with Leyton Orient on 28 August. He scored 62 goals in 201 league appearances for QPR, before being sold to Port Vale in May 1961 for a £2,000 fee.
Longbottom spent two seasons at Port Vale, scoring 20 goals in 49 games. He was then sold to Millwall for another £2,000 in January 1963. He made 10 appearances for Millwall, scoring twice, before joining Oxford United in the summer of 1963.
Longbottom played one season for Oxford, scoring 14 goals in 34 games. He then joined Colchester United in 1964, where he spent one season before retiring from professional football at the age of 31.
After retiring from football, Longbottom worked as a hairdresser and a taxi driver. He also played amateur football for Scarborough F.C..
Longbottom died on 17 September 2023 at the age of 90.
