Gladys Knight appeared as a guest star on several TV episodes in the 1980s and 1990s, including Benson, The Jeffersons, A Different World, Living Single, The Jamie Foxx Show, and New York Undercover. She co-starred with comedian Flip Wilson in the 1985 season of the CBS comedy series Charlie & Co.
In an April 2005 JAG episode, she had the role of a singer. In April 2009, she appeared as a special guest and performed a song for Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. In addition, Knight has made a number of cameo appearances, including ones in Las Vegas and 30 Rock.
In 2012, she began acting in recurrent episodes of the syndicated sitcom The First Family.
Knight competed in the 14th season of Dancing with the Stars in 2012 while partnered with Tristan MacManus. Ironically, they were eliminated on April 24 during “Motown Week” of the competition after falling short in a “dance duel” against Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan and his partner Chelsie Hightower.
In 2017, she appeared in the musical drama Star as herself.
She played Ella Grover, the mother of Captain Lou Grover, in the “Birds of a Feather” episode of Hawaii Five-0 from the previous year, which made its debut on November 16.
