Although Lumley was raised in Rugby, a town in the county of Warwickshire, she was really born in Barnsley. She had her early schooling at Rugby High School for Girls before moving on to East Warwickshire College.
In March 2013, she was one of 175 votes against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, which made same-sex marriage lawful in England and Wales.
Although Lumley supported civil partnerships, she believed that the law would change what marriae is and that the majority of her people would agree with her choice. Lumley retained her position during the May 2015 election.
In the EU Referendum in March 2016, she expressed support for voting to exit the Union. Lumley predicted that the action would help the UK reclaim its sovereignty.

She had two children with geologist Richard Lumley, whom she was married to. She passed on at the age of 59 years old.
