After attending a party there on September 8, 2017, 19-year-old Kenneka Jenkins was discovered dead inside a locked freezer at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare hotel in Rosemont, Illinois.

According to the medical examiner’s report, Jenkins’ death was unintentional. Jenkins was found to have topiramate and alcohol in her system, which is considered to have sped up the consequences of the hypothermia she suffered by being in the freezer.

Although the Rosemont police department did not believe there had been a crime, they acknowledged that their investigation was still ongoing.

The original police response was condemned by Jenkins’ family and friends, and a lawsuit was subsequently launched against the hotel and other parties. Later, family members complained that the original police response lacked urgency.

After a first review of camera footage that concentrated on entrances and exits produced no results, authorities discovered film of Jenkins wandering through the hotel at 10 p.m.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office declared Kenneka Jenkins’ death to be an accident on October 6, 2017.

Jenkins had no illegal substances in her system, according to the postmortem report, but her blood alcohol content was 0.112 instead.

Although she had never been prescribed topiramate, a substance that is used to treat epilepsy and migraine headaches, there were still traces of it in her system.

When topiramate and alcohol are combined, they can intensify one other’s effects and speed the onset of hypothermia, which was corroborated by lesions discovered in Jenkins’ stomach.

Although there was evidence of brain enlargement, it was not connected to the cause of death.

In September 2017, Kenneka was taking care of her mother, who had had breast surgery due to cancer. Kenneka informed her mother that she would be going out with some pals on September 8.

She informed her that in honor of her starting a job at a nursing home, they would be going bowling and then to a movie. Around 11:00 p.m., Kenneka borrowed her mother’s car and departed from home.
