Margaret Urlich was an ARIA Award-winning New Zealand musician.

Born January 24, 1965 in Auckland, New Zealand, she began her career as a co-lead vocalist with the New Zealand new wave band Peking Man, whose 1985 song Room That Echoes climbed to No 1 on the New Zealand charts.

She subsequently joined the all-girl group When The Cat’s Away in 1986, which won Best Group at the Aotearoa Music Awards and had another number one hit with a rendition of Melting Pot in 1988.

After launching a solo career, her debut album, Safety in Numbers, released in 1989, was highly successful and won “Breakthrough Artist – Album” at the 1991 ARIA Awards.

She had several songs to her credits including Only My Heart Calling, Escaping, Number One, Boy In The Moon, Pokarekare Ana, Don’t Dream It’s Over, Crime To Be That Cool, Your Love, and many more.

In 2021, she was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

Margaret Urlich died on August 22, 2022, at age 57 in the Southern Highlands after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.
