Music is a very important part of TikTok and, more often than not, works hand in hand with making viral moments.
Most TikToks use some form of music to get the point across, either as background music or as the focus of whatever the video is about. The snippet “I Remember When I Lost My Mind” is part of the latter tradition, where the lyrics used in the snippet are the subject of the video.
These snippets are very popular because they allow the TikTok creator boundless creativity in applying whatever story they want to onto the sound.
However, these lyrics and snippets are often used at face value, and people don’t dig into what they actually mean. But usually, the lyrics have a deeper meaning or a meaning different than intended, for they’re from a song much older than the primary users of TikTok.
“I Remember When I lost My Mind” TikTok Song Lyrics And Meaning Explained
The song “I Remember When I Lost My Mind” came from is one such song which is an old classic.
The snippet comes from a song called “Crazy” by the American Soul duo Gnarls Barkley.
Gnarls Barkley is made up of gifted producer Danger Mouse and famed singer-songwriter CeeLo Green.
The duo was active from 2003 to 2010, and in between, they released two albums called St. Elsewhere in 2006 and The Odd Couple in 2008.
However, they are most popular for the titular song, “Crazy” which peaked at number two on the United States Hot 100 and topped the UK Singles Chart.
The success of the song led to them being nominated for Record of the Year at the 2007 Grammy awards, and has since been certified platinum for shipping over a million records.
It also won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance the same year.
The song was derived from Danger House’s desire to create a song inspired by film scores of old Spaghetti Westerns in the same ilk as Ennio Morricone.
The lyrics, however, were inspired by Green and Danger Mouse’s conversation about how people don’t take an artist seriously unless they are insane.
So, they started joking about different ways they could make people think they were crazy.
Green then took what they talked about and wrote the entire song based on that conversation, and they allegedly recorded the song in one take.
Aside from chart and commercial success, the song has also grown a lot of cultural relevance since it came out.
It has been used in many different movies and television shows, with examples of the former being Birdman, The Big Short, and Boyhood, to name a few, and examples of the latter being Cold Case, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Grey’s Anatomy, among others.
And now, more than a decade and a half after its initial release, the song has seen a resurgence in popularity amongst Generation Z audiences who have used the song in various trends.
The two trends that the song has been popular in are the titular “I Remember When I Lost My Mind” challenge and an earlier “Who Do You Think You Are?” challenge which was popular back in the summer of 2020 when TikTok was first blowing up.
“I Remember When I lost My Mind” TikTok Dance Compilation Videos And Challenge
Though there are many dance videos to the snippet of “I Remember When I Lost My Mind” the challenge is more about singing.
People are trying to outdo the singer, CeeLo Green, for an opening couple of lines of the song.
The challenge involves doing a couple of vocal runs during the song’s first two or so lines.
Many people, especially independent singers trying to grow their brands, are using this challenge to show off their vocal chops.
Since it is a primarily vocal challenge, it has afforded people the opportunity to go crazy with their vocals and develop runs within runs, belting, and a host of other vocal challenges within the original challenge of singing the song.
However, a fun twist on this challenge has been people purposefully singing the song badly or veering off course in their run for comedic effects.
If one goes on TikTok, the most liked video in the “I remember When I Lost My Mind” challenge is an elder Asian man singing the song badly while his son tries to contain his laughter.
Most of the people doing this comedic bend to the trend seem to be people of color, especially older people of color, but some caucasian people have been doing it too.
As of the writing of this article, the challenge has been made into thousands of videos and is still going strong.
The resurgence of “Crazy” comes at the heels of a very tumultuous and controversial 2010s for CeeLo Green, whose career and reputation saw a downward spiral due to some derogatory things he said to women the LGBT community.
It’s anyone’s guess if the resurgence of Crazy will save his career. Time will Tell.
